Catania Calls Williams a Liar

"WASHINGTON - Councilman David Catania is accusing the mayor of 'playing fast and loose' with the facts concerning cost overruns for the planned stadium in Southeast.

Mayor Tony Williams said today during an announcement about his choice for Nationals ownership that the $535 million the city's budgeted for stadium construction won't be exceeded.

He said that sum is meant to pay for the stadium itself, while other parts of the complex can come from other funds, and can be largely paid for through private investment.

But Catania calls that 'a form of intellectual dishonesty.' He says council intended for the money it budgeted to pay for everything.

He says the mayor has to be more forceful in its negotiations with Major League Baseball to get it to pay a share.
