Allen's grandson makes 195 murders

"A 15-year-old grandson of former D.C. Council member Sandy Allen died Saturday night at a District hospital after being shot that afternoon on a Southeast Washington street, D.C. police said yesterday. John Allen Jr., of the 3300 block of 14th Place SE, was pronounced dead at Howard University Hospital at 10:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, according to police. Allen's death was the last recorded homicide in the District for 2005, bringing the preliminary total for the year to 195 slayings, according to Sgt. Joe Gentile, a police spokesman. Police said that about 1:15 p.m. Saturday, a dark-colored minivan pulled into the 3400 block of 13th Place SE, and a man got out and started shooting. Allen was struck in the abdomen or stomach. 'He had apparently been involved in a fight earlier, but we don't know if it is related to the shooting,' said D.C. Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey. Sandy Allen, who represented Ward 8 until she lost a reelection bid in the Democratic primary in 2004, declined to comment yesterday. In August, another grandson, Russell Mitchell, 18 at the time, was charged in the killing of a woman who was struck by a stray bullet in Southeast.
